European Travel Guide
COUNTRIES to Visit

Know before you go — the destinations that reward good planning.

Europe is endlessly rich — and endlessly different from one country to the next. Italy and Ireland are nothing alike. Greece and Switzerland share almost nothing. This guide walks through the destinations I plan most often, what makes each one tick, and how to think about building your trip around them.

Italy
Southern Europe

Italy

Rich history, culture, and stunning landscapes from north to south. Southern Italy brings Sicily, Capri, and the Amalfi Coast. Central Italy: Rome, Tuscany, Florence, and Pisa. Northern Italy: Milan, Venice, Bologna, and Lake Como. The hardest part is choosing a region — most clients come back for the ones they missed.

Highlights Amalfi Coast · Rome · Venice · Tuscany · Lake Como
Getting Around High-speed rail · Guided tours · Self-drive in rural areas
Spain and Portugal
Iberian Peninsula

Spain & Portugal

Barcelona, Madrid, Seville — then across to Lisbon, Porto, and the Algarve. Visiting both countries in one trip is remarkably seamless, whether by high-speed train, short flight, or scenic drive. Spain’s energy and Portugal’s warmth make for a natural pairing.

Highlights Barcelona · Lisbon · Seville · Porto · Algarve Coast
Getting Around High-speed rail · Short domestic flights · Scenic drive
Ireland
British Isles

Ireland

Breathtaking landscapes, deep history, and genuine warmth. The Cliffs of Moher, the Ring of Kerry, and lively Dublin are the anchors — but Ireland rewards wandering. The key planning decision: self-drive (liberating, scenic) or guided tour (carefree, social). Both work beautifully.

Highlights Cliffs of Moher · Ring of Kerry · Dublin · Galway
Getting Around Self-drive or escorted guided tour
Switzerland
Central Europe

Switzerland

Alpine scenery, charming villages, crystal-clear lakes, and iconic landmarks like the Matterhorn and Jungfraujoch. Famous for skiing in winter — but summer is equally stunning for hiking, lake cruises, and mountain views. Switzerland’s world-class rail network makes exploration effortless.

Highlights Matterhorn · Jungfraujoch · Lucerne · Lake Geneva
Getting Around Swiss Rail Pass — one of the world’s great train networks
Greece
Mediterranean

Greece

Athens as your anchor, then island-hopping through Santorini, Mykonos, Crete, or Rhodes. The key to Greece is focus — choose a few islands rather than rushing through many. Ferries are scenic and reliable; domestic flights are better for longer hops.

Highlights Santorini · Athens · Crete · Mykonos · Rhodes
Getting Around Ferries (scenic) · Domestic flights · Escorted guided tour
Iceland
North Atlantic

Iceland

Dramatic and singular — volcanic landscapes, the midnight sun, the Northern Lights, the Golden Circle, and the Blue Lagoon. Iceland is an adventure trip as much as a sightseeing one. Best approach: rent a car and drive the Ring Road at your own pace, or join a guided journey that handles the logistics.

Highlights Northern Lights · Blue Lagoon · Golden Circle · Glaciers
Getting Around Rental car (Ring Road) or guided tour
